THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Hola chicos:

¡Vamos a crear un pulmón! ¿vale? Y con él aprenderemos su funcionamiento. Es muy fácil, veréis.

Coged una botella de agua vacía y dos globos: el primero lo ponéis en la parte de arriba (parte más estrecha de la botella) y el otro en la parte de abajo de la botella, habiendo cortado previamente un trozo de la botella y otro del globo (la parte más estrecha).

Creating a model lung is pretty simple. Start with a plastic bottle, any size will do. Cut the bottom off the bottle. Place a ballon in the neck of the bottle, and stretch the opening of the ballon over the opening of the bottle. Cut the narrow part off of a second balloon. Stretch the remaining balloon over the bottom of the bottle...that´s it!

HOW DOES IT WORK? The top balloon represents a lung, the other represents the diaphragm.

When you breathe in, the diaphragm contracts (pull the diaphragm balloon down). This lowers the air pressure in the chest cavity (because there´s more room) and air fills the lungs.
