THE PLANT KINGDOM (I)
FLOWERING PLANTS
Flowering plants are the biggest group of plants on Earth. Most flowering plants use sexual reproduction. They grow flowers which are their reproductive organs. These plants reproduce through seeds and produce them in two different ways.
  • In ANGIOSPERMS pollinated flowers produce fruits with seeds inside. Angiosperms include not only roses or daffodils, but also trees such as cherry trees or fig trees. Bushes like blackberries and raspberries, and grasses, such as wheat and rice, are also angiosperms.
  • GYMSNOSPERMS have small flowers. They don´t produce any fruit and their seeds develop in cones. Many gymnsperms, such as pine trees, have long thin leaves called needles.
NON-FLOWERING PLANTS
Non-flowering plants do not produce seeds. They produce asexually using spores. There are 2 main groups of non-flowering plants: ferns and mosses.
FERNS
  • They have roots and strong stems which grow under the ground.
  • They have large leaves called fronds.
  • They produce spores inside sori on the underside of the fronds.
  • Ferms are one of the oldest plants on Earth. They evolved more than 300 million years ago.
MOSSES
  • They have very simple stems and leaves. Their roots are called rhizoids.
  • They produce spores inside capsules.

THE PLANT KINGDOM (II)

You must know...

  • ROOTS hold the plant in the ground. Roots absorb water and minerals needed for nutrition from the ground through the root hairs.
  • STEM holds up the other parts of the plant. It also transports materials to and from the leaves. Water and minerals travel through the stem to the leaves for photosynthesis. The food produced through photosynthesis then travels to the other parts of the plant.
  • LEAVES contain chlorophyll, a green substance which is necesarry for photosynthesis. Most leaves have two parts: the petiole and the blade. Veins in the blade support the leaf and carry water and minerals. On the underside of the blade, there are tiny holes, called stomata. The gas exchange in leaves takes place through stomata.   1. The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.
  2. Xylem cells transport this mixture of water and minerals, called raw sap, through the stem to the leaves.
  3. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) through their stomata. In certain parts of the plant cells called chloroplasts, chlorophyll collects solar energy to transform water, minerals and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen (O2).
  4. Phloem cells carry the glucose, the plants´food, through the stem to all the parts of the plant.
Why photosynthesis is the most important process to life on Earth?
  • The photosynthesis provides us with oxygen to breathe. For this reason plants are called the lungs of the Earth.
  • It consumes carbon dioxide, which is toxic to most living things.
  • It transforms water and minerals into food. Then animals can feed on plants to get energy to live.

HEALTH AND ILLNESS
In this unit, you will study diseases such as infectious, contagious and non-contagious diseases; the causes and the treatment needed; the ways to prevent these diseases.
How can you lead a healthier life? It is very important you adopt healthy eating habits and be aware of the dangers of too many hours spent in front of a screen, nintendo, wifi o ps4. Have a responsible attitude towards your body :)

  • Why people are living longer nowadays? Think about things that doctors and hospitals have now that didn´t exist 100 years ago such as wider access to medical treatment, clean drinking water, better sanitation, advances such as x-rays, vaccinations, antibiotics, blood transfusions...
  • What is a first aid and what it is used for? Emergency given immediately after an accident.
  • What are these things used for? PAINKILLER (to stop pain), THERMOMETER (to measure temperature), EARPLUGS (to protect ears from noise or water), ANTIBIOTICS (to fight infections) X-RAYS (to see inside the body) and HELMET(to protect the skull).

DISEASES AND ILLNESSES
Your are going to learn about infections and contagious diseases (they are caused by pathogens); how diseases are spread; you will distinguish diseases caused by bacteria and virus. You also will study non-infectious diseases and compare them to infectious diseases.

They are not caused by organisms, and therefore, cannot be spread from person to person. They are caused by factors such as environment, unhealthy lifestyle, genetics, vitamin deficiency or organ malfunction.

  • Cells that carry out the same function group together to form tissue. Muscle tissue, for example, is made up of many muscle cells grouped together (TISSUE).
  • Organs that work together forms systems, such as the circulatory system, which is made up of the heart and blood vessels. (ORGAN SYSTEM).
  • All living things are made up of tiny units called cells. A cell is the smallest possible living unit. Cells are the building blocks of life. (CELL).
  • A group of systems working together form an organism. An organism is a living thing.(ORGANISM).
  • Tissues group together to form an organ. Organs, such as the heart, contain different types of tissue which work together to perform a particular function. (ORGAN).
After listening the recording about human body systems and their functions, you have those sentences (the solutions are in capital letters) :)
  • The process of breaking down food is called DIGESTION.
  • Excretion is carried out by EXCRETORY and also SWEAT GLANDS.
  • The respiration system carries out RESPIRATION.
  • The circulatory system consists of HEART, BLOOD VESSELS, BLOOD.
  • The heart is an organ that PUMPS BLOOD AROUND THE BODY.
  • Human reproduction is SEXUAL.
